Peter Nero and the Philly POPS! will be performing their 10th annual “Pops on Independence” free concert tonight at Independence Hall at 8:00pm. The Pops will perform a variety of American songs from patriotic anthems and marches to big band and Broadway classics. Bring blankets, lawn chairs, and a picnic out to this popular outdoor concert at Independence Hall. Seating is first come, first served.

The South Philly Sunoco refinery will remain open after a deal was struck between the Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C., private equity manager, and Sunoco. The new joint venture will be called Philadelphia Energy Solutions. The refinery was set to close at the end of this month as Sunoco was going to pull out of the refining business altogether. Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was named to his first All-Star game today. Chooch has had a career year at the plate combined with his stellar defense behind the plate. He will backup San Fransico's Buster Posey who was voted as the starter for the National League.
Two other Phillies also were selected to represent at the 83rd Midsummer classic July 10th. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels and closer Jonathan Papelbon were picked by Cardinals' manager Tony LaRussa.Read More |

Severe thunderstorms overnight Saturday left Atlantic County with widespread damage and a large number of power outages. A State of Emergency has been declared in the county that restricts travel so that crews can assess damage and clear debris. Temperatures in the mid-90's and numerous downed-trees and power lines hampered efforts to restore power as quickly as possible to the 206,000 households that lost it during the storm. Earlier this week the School Reform Commission's search committee presented its two finalists for the job of Superintendent of the Philadelphia School District. They were Pedro Martinez of Las Vegas and William Hite from Prince George County, MD. It is being reported today that Martinez took the job of superintendent in Washoe County, NV. Earlier today authorities issued a warrant after the South Jersey man charged with DUI 5 times over a five week period failed to show up for his court hearing.
Anderson Sotomayor, 45, was out on $20,000 bail as of Monday. He spent about a month in jail after his 5th DWI arrest May 16th because he was also caught with prescription Oxycodone pills. The Supreme Court upheld President Obama's health care overhaul with a 5-4 vote today ruling that it was mostly ok. The biggest part of contention was the requirement that all people purchase health care - the individual mandate. Once again Dave Matthews Band delighted the capacity crowd at the Susquehanna Bank Center on Night 2 of their two day run here in "the place in New Jersey closest to Philadelphia" according the Dave himself. This show took a little longer to get going, but Philly has always been one of the band's best fan bases and they seemed comfortable with a slightly different setlist. Central Bucks High School East teacher, Natalie Munroe, was dismissed on a 7-0 vote by the school board. The Bucks County teacher drew national attention last year with her 'anonymously' penned blog, calling her students "frightfully dim" and "utterly loathsome."
