Philadelphia Folk Festival Saturday Brings the Rock to Folk |

Saturday broke on the Old Pool Farm and the remnants of the rains from Friday night could only be seen in the mud patches throughout the grounds. The sky was full of patches of sun and puffy clouds and the humidity was gone with just warm pleasant temperatures. The activity started early with musical acts on all the smaller stages at 11 am. Small crowds gathered at either the Tank, Craft, Lobby, or Camp stages to hear a variety of intimate performances and terrific collaborations.

The first full day of activity at the Philadelphia Folk Fest certainly got off on the right foot. Most of the acts scheduled to play both on Main Stage in the afternoon and the Lobby stage in the late morning/early afternoon were locally sourced, Philadelphia based bands. The 51st Annual Philadelphia Folk Fest is once again descending upon the Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford, PA. The four day festival includes camping, a craft show, food of all kinds, and vendors of various sorts showcasing their wares. The Justice Department has announced a settlement in the racial discrimination case against the former Valley Swim club in Huntingdon Valley dating back to June 2009. The suburban swim club allowed Creative Steps Day Camp of Northeast Philadelphia access to the pool for summer campers. After the first day, they refunded the camp's money and asked them not to return. The club claimed there were too many campers and they were too rowdy for lifeguards to handle. Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. which owns Greenhouse on Vandam Street in SoHo, and shares space, a liquor license and owners with W.I.P. has filed a $16 million lawsuit against hip hop stars Chris Brown and Drake.

A planned memorial service for Philadelphia native and actor Sherman Hemsley set for Thursday has been canceled. Hemsley is best know for his roles in 1970's sitcoms All in the Family and The Jeffersons.
The memorial service was scheduled to be held at the Deliverance Evangelistic Church in North Philadelphia at 11 am, Thurs. 8/16. The church confirmed that it was canceled, but there is no explanation for this cancellation or if it might be rescheduled. Relatives of... Read More |

Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson issued a decision today that denied a bid by various civil rights groups looking to block the new Pennsylvania Voter ID law from taking effect. Simpson said that the plainiffs, which included the ACLU and others, failed to prove that “disenfranchisement was immediate or inevitable” or that not issuing an injuction would cause “greater injury.” In fact he said stopping the process now would get in the way of preparations underway for the November... A recent study on Adult Obesity shows that Pennsylvanians are a bit larger around the waist than a few of our neighbors. The study was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and split out each state by the percentage of the population considered to be obese. The numbers are not very flattering. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is set to auction off its large beachfront property in Ventnor, NJ to help payoff some of a $17 million deficit.
