It was a surprise welcome home for a young soldier in Cherry Hill over the weekend. Francesca "Chessie" Vollaro returned from a tour in Afghanistan three weeks ago. The 21 year old graduated high school in 2010 and was surprised by a gathering of friends and a motorcycle parade. Chessie will participate in a beauty pageant and then pursue a career in law enforcement.

United States Education Secretary, Arne Duncan says there is no excuse in the 21st century for any school system to be in the financial position Philadelphia’s school system is in. Duncan is working closely with Mayor Nutter, Governor Corbett, Superintendent William R. Hite and Teachers Union head, Jerry Jordan to change a system that put Philly’s schools in a $300 million hole.

A half-million dollars in jewelry was stolen from a store in the Borgata Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. Last night at about 8:45 3 robbers executed a smash and grab then took off in a dark colored vehicle. The three men may have had a fourth accomplice as a driver. Atlantic City Police are welcoming any information.

Just before the midnight deadline, Governor Corbett and state lawmakers agreed to throw a lifeline to the Philadelphia School District with a $140 million bailout package. $30 million will come from tax collections, $45 million will come from funds that would have been paid back to the federal government, and $16 million is part of the new state budget. Schools are still well short of what they need to fill the $300 million deficit.

The 76ers made some big moves last night in General Manager, Sam Hinkie's first draft. The Sixers traded away their all-star point guard, Jrue Holiday to get the sixth overall pick, Kentucky big man, Nerlens Noel. Noel was projected to be a the number 1 overall pick but slipped to 6 when he injured his knee. More federal money has been pledged by FEMA to reimburse New Jersey towns recovering from Hurricane Sandy. The additional $240 million brings the total to 90% of the total costs towns paid for emergency operations, repair and cleanup. The prior commitment had been for 75%, so the additional funding means big relief for taxpayers who will now pay for a smaller portion of the recovery.

The crane operator involved in the deadly building collapse on Market Street this month is in court today for a preliminary hearing. Sean Benschop is charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter, one count of reckless endangerment and causing a catastrophe. Benschop allegedly had marijuana and pain killers in his system at the time of the collapse on June 5th.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia will build a new Pediatric Care center thanks in large part to a $50 million gift from a Fort Washington financial services firm. The building will be called The Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care. The $50 million gift is the largest ever to CHOP and will be a big help covering the $425 million cost of the new building on the University City site.
