It's the first day of school for about 134,000 Philadelphia public school students today. The teachers are teaching with larger class sizes and still negotiating over the 13 percent giveback in salary the city has requested. The school budget crisis means up to 40 students per class and fewer administrative personnel, guidance counselors, security and nurses.

Police in Lower Merion and Radnor are working together on a couple of carjackings in their towns. Last week at the Beaumont Retirement Center in Bryn Mawr, a resident reported his car stolen at gunpoint. Then, Tuesday evening at the Villanova train station, a woman was forced out of her Porsche Cayenne while she waited for her husband.

Tonight the NFL regular season kicks off in Denver Colorado. Outside the Bronco's stadium, a billboard has been put up by the reform group, The Marijuana Policy Project challenging the NFL to change its policy on pot. The message reads, "Stop driving players to drink" and promotes marijuana, now legal in Colorado, as a safer choice.

Convicted kidnapper and rapist, Ariel Castro is dead, an apparent suicide, after he was found hanging in his prison cell last night. The Cleveland man had been sentenced to life plus 1,000 years on August 1st for kidnapping three women 10 years ago and holding them as slaves until they were rescued this year.

Teachers in Philadelphia are back to work but still have no contract. They've agreed to pay freezes and contributions to their health care, however they are now being asked to accept pay cuts of up to 13%. More than 4,000 Union members attended a meeting yesterday where they voted to continue negotiating.

Hymie's Deli in Merion on Montgomery Avenue was the scene of an accident this morning when a pickup truck drove through the front of the building into the dining area. The driver of the truck was hospitalized but no one was in the dining area at the time. Dining is closed but the deli will remain open for the weekend rush.

The Philadelphia teachers union is ready to make some concessions in contract talks with the school district. President of the Federation of Teachers Jerry Jordan says he will recommend accepting a pay freeze and agree to have teachers begin making contributions to health care premiums. Jordan says he is interested in getting schools staffed properly so they can open on time.

Sarah Murnaghan is making national headlines. The 11 year old girl who underwent two double lung transplants is headed home from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia today. Sarah has Cystic Fibrosis and needed a court order to get an adult lung transplant because donor rules denied her as too young for the transplant. In court, the rule was suspended and Sarah got the transplant she needed to live.
