J.C Penney is closing 33 stores nationwide, two in the Philadelphia suburbs. Penney's is struggling to get to profitability and it will cut 2,000 jobs including employees of stores in Exton and Burlington. The retailer operates 1,100 stores and is doing more to recover from a turnaround plan that so far, has had disastrous results.

A cop killer escaped a death row sentence and the family of the murdered officer is outraged. Judge Teresa Sarmina vacated the sentence of Edward Bracey who killed Officer Daniel Boyle 22 years ago. Sarmina found that Bracey was "mentally retarded" and could not be executed under a Supreme Court ruling. Bracey who shot Boyle during a traffic stop will spend life in prison.

A 16 year old straight A, Philadelphia charter school student is claiming police went overboard roughing him up at a train station while he was with teammates on his way to a basketball game. Darrin Manning claims a female officer sexually assaulted him during a pat down and ruptured one of his testicles. The 22nd district is investigating.

A grand jury is investigating two Philadelphia police officials for the alleged cover-up of an arrest in 2012. According to the Daily News, Inspector Aaron Horne and Captain John McCloskey are the subjects of the probe. Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey suspended the pair but did not fire them after they tried to erase all traces of a violent incident in Oak Lane.

A Kensington man was sent to prison after 1300 potted marijuana plants (pictured) were found in his home. Forty one year old Vinh Quang Nguyen pleaded guilty to possession with intent to sell. His grow house on the 2300 block of Frankford Avenue was intended to provide income for his girlfriend and her two children, 4 and 6 years old. Instead, it got him 3 to 7 years in prison.

Flash flood watches are in effect and flood warnings have been issued for Bucks and Mercer counties on both sides of the Delaware. Ice jams have formed causing water levels to rise. When the ice jam breaks, water accumulated behind the ice can cause floods downstream.

Some of the coldest temperatures in decades were recorded in the last 36 hours from the Philadelphia region to the Jersey Shore. On Long Beach Island Harvey Cedars Police provided photos of a frozen Barnegat Bay. The scene with frozen docks and an ice covered bay looks more like Alaska than New Jersey.

After 18 months in prison, Monsignor William Lynn emerged 80 pounds thinner. As he left court after a ruling overturned his 3 to 6 year conviction, a handful of hecklers pelted him with taunts and insults. Lynn will remain out on bail, living on house arrest and must wear an electronic monitoring device. Monsignor Lynn was warned that a violation of any bail terms will lead to re-arrest and jail. The weather roller coaster will have the thermometer in a free fall this afternoon. This morning the temperature at the airport was 59 degrees. In the next 12 hours the temperature will drop 50 degrees with wind chills well below zero. The first winter storm of 2014 dumped up to 8 inches of snow on parts of the Philadelphia area. Schools are closed, driving is treacherous and the cleanup is difficult because it is cold. Temperatures will stay in the teens and the winds will blow up to 45 miles per hour. Wind chill factors around zero. If you go out to shovel or any other reason, cover exposed skin.
