Power Outages; Delineators Tested on Bike Lanes; Police Mural Defaced

Last night's 75 mile per hour winds and severe weather toppled trees, shut down roads, cut power and brought mass transit to a standstill. Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power. Delaware and Chester counties in PA got slammed. iRadioPhilly's power grid was down for hours. Cape May, Gloucester and Camden counties in N.J. were the hardest hit. Down wires and trees are still getting cleaned up after many interruptions to routines and commutes this morning.

Tuesday's storms have caused big problems on SEPTA rail lines this morning. Downed trees and power outages have cause suspensions on regional rails. The Media-Elwyn and Fox Chase lines are suspended. The Paoli Thorndale Line is shut down between Thorndale and Malvern. Norristown High Speed line is suspended between Radnor and Norristown and there's no service at the Chester Transportation Center. Organizers for the World Meeting of Families announced the musical performers that would take the stage at the foot of the Art Museum steps on the Ben Franklin Parkway during the Festival of Families on Saturday, September 26th. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, Colombian rock/pop star Juanez, and the Philadelphia Orchestra will all perform. Severe Storms, Damage, Power Outages; Wedding Reception Brawl in Berks County; Youth Baseball Scam

Severe thunderstorms rolled through the area this evening with heavy rains, strong winds, frequent lightening, and flooding. There were two Tornado Warnings issued, in Chester County, PA and Camden County, NJ. No confirmed reports yet. 140,000 lost power in the Philadelphia area due to down wires, lightening strikes, and fallen trees and debris. Atlantic City Electric reported that 249,000 lost power. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Philadelphia today. The heat advisory will be in effect in until 6:00 p.m. With highs in the mid 90's accompanied by intense humidity, the heat index is expected to feel upwards of 100 degrees. After highs of 91 on Sunday and Monday, Tuesday rounds out the first official heat wave of the year. Severe thunderstorms are likely after 4 pm as a strong system moves in from the West part of Pennsylvania.

A committee of the Philadelphia Historical Commission today will weigh in on a developer's plans for a ten-story apartment building in Old City — on the same block as the Betsy Ross House. PMC Property Group wants to turn a parking lot at 218 Arch Street in Old City into a ten-story apartment building with some first-floor retail and two levels of parking underground. Maroon 5 is not on tour this summer, but they've just announced two special shows in our area this August. The big show will be on August 16th on the beach in Atlantic City. Last year, fellow "The Voice" judge Blake Shelton and Lady Antebellum played free concerts on the beach, drawing 60,000 each. Two people were injured after a SUV slammed through the front door of a brick home in Philadelphia's Rhawnhurt section. It happened around 5:35 p.m. this afternoon at the intersection of Castor Avenue and Loney Street. When police arrived they found a Jeep Cherokee crashed into the front of the building.
