The mayors of Avalon and Stone Harbor in Cape May County, New Jersey, announced that their beaches will reopen for limited activities starting Friday morning, 5/8. Mayors Martin Pagliuighi and Judith Davies-Dunhour made the joint announcement in a letter dated May 4. Two teen girls were struck by a beach patrol vehicle while lying on the beach in Ship Bottom on Saturday, 5/2. It happened on the 26th Street Beach around 1p.m. The girls, 14 and 15, were airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center with lower body injuries, but have since been released to their families. 22-year-old John Purdon of Barnegat, NJ, was driving the vehicle at the time. Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney released a revised budget for fiscal year 2021 in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic on May 1, 2020. Businesses have been closed and workers have been off the job for weeks, reducing the city's tax revenue significantly. Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced on Friday, May 1, that 24 counties in the northwestern and north-central regions of the state will begin to reopen next Friday, May 8. Those areas will move from the 'red' phase to the 'yellow' phase in Wolf's three-phase COVID-19 reopening plan.
