Memorial Day Traffic, Kane Office Messages, New American Citizens Take Oath

Farley Service Plaza was full of many tan faces after a Memorial Day Weekend down the shore, but some red ones too from anger and frustration caused by the ride home. Four hours was one driver's time from Avalon to South Philly. On a scale of 1-10 with ten being the worst it was probably an eight or nine as some of the worst traffic ever seen. Backups on the Garden State Parkway northbound reached around 20 miles at one point.

Fire broke out during Memorial Day celebrations at an American Legion post in the city's Frankford section. It happened around 3 p.m. at American Legion Post 396 on the 2300 block of Orthodox Street. Smoke was seen coming from a dumbwaiter by the bar. A motor had ignited a tiny fire in the attic. Attendees at the annual dinner banquet were forced to evacuate after it couldn't be contained with extinguishers. The blaze eventually went to 4-alarms and took 2 ½ hours to contain. One... A student has been arrested in Montgomery County for allegedly setting a fire at North Penn High School on Tuesday. The 17-year-old student at the school has not been identified but is being detained in a county juvenile detention center according to a statement from North Penn School District officials. A 49 year old woman who checked into a clinic in Pennsylvania with symptoms of a urinary tract infection is the first American found to have a new antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Her bacteria, a strain of E. coli, is treatable with some antibiotics, but it is resistant to the antibiotic colistin, a drug sometimes used as a last resort for difficult-to-treat infections. Over a dozen middle school students from Bucks County were hospitalized this afternoon following a field trip. Six grade students from William Penn Middle School in Lower Makefield went to Arm & Hammer Park to see the Trenton Thunder minor league baseball game. Two students complained of feeling lightheaded and of other symptoms of heat exhaustion and were taken to Capital Health in Trenton for treatment. Bruce Springsteen was caught showing Penn State pride. Springsteen was photographed in Spain on Wednesday wearing a Penn State cap. The Boss recently performed in State College. One Day Without Sound, Solar Plane Lands in Lehigh Valley, Nutter Theater Dedication

Tuesday, May 31st marks the 3rd Annual "One Day Without Sound." It's a nationwide challenge designed to increase awareness about hearing loss. On "One Day Without Sound," Shawn Veight, a hearing instrument specialist with the Miracle Ear Foundation and others are urging people to wear a pair of earplugs or sound reducing headphones to realize how much we take sound for granted. And he hopes people will do something to prevent hearing loss.

PLCB Approves 6-Packs at Gas Stations; Arrest in Northeast Hit-And-Run; Interlock for First-Time DUI

At the urging of Governor Tom Wolf to 'free the 6-pack,' the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved the licenses of several business that also sell gasoline. 9 different businesses across the state were approved to sell up to 192 ounces of malt or brewed beverages. The gas stations must have a convenience type store that regularly serves food and have seating for at least 30 people. Tourist Killed by Train; Atlantic City Pushes for Business; Downey's is Open

A sightseer from Texas was struck and killed by the Market-Frankford el yesterday afternoon in Center City after visiting the Liberty Bell. The victim was with his wife on the packed platform of the 13th Street station at the height of rush hour. He leaned over from the platform to see if his train was coming, lost his balance and fell onto the tracks. Seconds later, he was struck and killed.
