PA Woman First with Antibiotic Resistant Bug; Early Arrivals at the Shore; Church Van Driver Killed

A 49 year old woman who checked into a clinic in Pennsylvania with symptoms of a urinary tract infection is the first American found to have a new antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Her bacteria, a strain of E. coli, is treatable with some antibiotics, but it is resistant to the antibiotic colistin, a drug sometimes used as a last resort for difficult-to-treat infections. According to infectious-disease experts, the bacteria is scarier because of the potential to spread colistin resistance to other types of bacteria.

The early birds were on the road this morning beating the traffic on their way to the Jersey shore for the Memorial Day weekend. Travelers pulling boats and toting carloads of kids in Garden State Parkway rest areas early this morning say they got on the road as early as 4 am to be the first ones at the beach.

Police are searching for a motorist who ran down a church van driver killing him then leaving the scene. The 57-year-old victim had just dropped members at their residence late Thursday night near Front and Diamond Streets in Kensington. The driver was stepping from the van when a passing vehicle hit him and the open driver's side door. The victim was dragged 15 feet. Police are reviewing surveillance video.
