All Four Philadelphia Catholic High Schools Will Be Saved

It is official. All four Philadelphia Catholic Archdiocesan High Schools have been saved and will remain open. Archbishop Charles Chaput announced his decision on the appeals of 3 of the Catholic high schools today at 3 pm. The Blue Ribbon Commission had recommended closing West Catholic, St. Hubert, Conwell-Egan and Bonner-Prendergast High Schools last month. The 3 later schools filed official appeals of that recommendation, West Catholic did not appeal but will remain open as well.

Millions of dollars in donations have poured in to save the schools. Those donations came in many forms both very large and very small, from alumni and students to generous anonymous benefactors, from more than 20,000 people. Last week, just before the Archdiocese had planned to release its decision on all appeals, there were some last minute changes to the financial situations involving those high schools. Some large potential donors surfaced, and Archbishop Chaput decided to put off his decision on the high schools for a week to consider this new information. These new donations and benefactors as well as the work done by the schools have put the high schools in a good financial position for at least the next several years.

The Archdiocese announced its final decisions on appeals for elementary schools last week. 18 elementary schools were granted their appeal and will remain open. (18 Catholic Grade Schools Have Won Appeal to Remain Parish Schools)
