Official Confirmation: 18 Catholic Grade Schools Have Won Appeal to Remain Parish Schools
  by: iradioal - Philadelphia, PA
started: 02/17/12 6:20 am | updated: 02/17/12 6:20 am
18 schools have won their appeals after being recommended for closure and/or merging by the Blue Ribbon Commission to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia earlier this year. Each school had to present their case, along with the school they were being merged with, as to why they were wrongly targeted or the information used to make the initial decision might have been incorrect.

The schools that are going to remain parish schools include:
- Bucks County -
St. Mark, Bristol
Holy Trinity in Morrisville
St. Michael the Archangel
Our Lady of Grace
St. Ephrem
St. John the Baptist

- Chester County -
St. Cornelius
St. Patrick, Malvern

- Delaware County -
St. Andrews
St. Frances de Sales
St. Thomas the Apostle

- Montgomery County -
Visitation BVM, Norristown

- Philadelphia North -
St. George
Holy Cross
Our Mother of Consolation
St. Matthew
St. Cecilia

- Philadelphia South -
St. Laurentis

The Archdiocese is also working on a plan to fund and start up to 14 mission schools, that will allow schools that can't afford to stay open on their own, remain open through funding sources, such as St. Malachy's.

The High School appeal decisions will be announced next week. Archbishop Chaput is taking extra time to consider additional financial and donor information in regards to the high schools. The high schools that appealed at Bonner-Prendie, Conwell-Egan, and St. Huberts. West Catholic did not appeal.

Archbishop Charles Chaput, O.F.M. Cap, Archbishop of Philadelphia, said, "I recognize how anxious all of those affected by this decision are to hear the final outcome. I want to see this resolved too but this decision is too important to be made without considering absolutely every fact and all serious, substantive proposals even if they don’t fit the time frame originally set. We owe it to our teachers, administrators, students and school families."
