Philly Undercover Debuts on Nat Geo Wild

The fight against animal cruelty in Philadelphia is getting national exposure in a National Geographic channel show.

The series, "Philly Undercover", covers everything from dog - and bird - fighting to pet hoarding.

The show is the result of video crews following Philadelphia animal cops on their rounds for eight months.

Philly Undercover airs on Nat Geo Monday nights at 9.

"Animal fighting, especially, has escalated in the last three to four years, and animal cruelty, just across the board, has also escalated," notes Pennsylvania SPCA chief investigator George Bengal.

And here in Philadelphia, Bengal adds, there's always the shadow of the most famous ex-dog fighter, Michael Vick.

"Obviously him being engaged in this put it out there in the forefront so people know this goes on," Bengal tells KYW Newsradio. He says that the worst hoarding case he ever saw was a home with 110 chihuahuas.

It's amazing that it is legal for people to buy and sell those videos of dogs fighting. I can't imagine why people would want to watch it for fun, but these days we are all desensitized by what we see. The internet exposes us to all sorts of perversions that we didn't have access to in the past. However, it's one thing to see something on tape and another to act it out.

I commend the officers of the PSPCA and the jobs they do. It's not easy, especially when the victims are not human, which makes it hard to give them the same respect and service. more so, since the perpetrators obviously don't, but the public doesn't always think so either.
