| Joe Biden Gets Medal of Freedom - Video, Philly Minimum Wage Protest. 19th Street Bridge Reopens |

President Barack Obama surprised an emotional Vice President Joe Biden Thursday by presenting him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, during a White House ceremony. Biden, who appeared extremely emotional during the tribute and was seen tearing up, accepted the award but said he did not deserve it. Before surprising Biden with the award, Obama gave lengthy and colorful remarks praising Biden, his wife Dr. Jill Biden and his children and grandchildren. About a half-dozen people stood in front of the Philadelphia offices of the Labor Department in Center City asking for an increase to the national minimum wage, from $7.25 an hour to $15 an hour. They also protested Andy Puzder's nomination as U.S. Secretary of Labor, since he's a known critic of an increase to minimum wage. Protestor Alicia Hamel says, "I have a 1-year old son and another son on the way, and it's just really hard working on $7.25 and making ends meet - especially dealing with rent and bills, especially with what people are asking for for rent," she said. "I like my job, but if wages don't get raised, I'm going to have to try to figure out something, or try to get another job to try and make ends meets."
PennDOT has reopened the rebuilt 19th Street Bridge over I-76, but the overall project continues. The 19th Street Bridge was closed on October 1st, 2015, shortly after the Papal visit. Construction crews replaced the deteriorated two-span structure with a single span, eliminating the pier that previously supported the bridge in the middle of I-676, and built two new southbound lanes. The bridge also features new, wider sidewalks, ornamental fencing, and concrete planter boxes. PennDOT's Gene Blaum says that's one bridge done, six more to go. The entire $65 million project is expected to be wrapped up in late 2018 and is about a year ahead of schedule. Other bridges include: 20th, 21st, and 22nd Streets, and the pedestrian bridges between 18th and 19th, and 19th and 20th.
