Mayfair Police Support Rally, Philadelphia Boys Choir and Chorale Head To Cuba, Core Creek Park Cats

With tensions on the rise between civilians and law enforcement throughout the country, hundreds of people in Northeast Philadelphia gathered for a rally to show their support for police officers. Waving flags and signs and blowing whistles, the crowd lined up on Frankford and Cottman Avenues in the city's Mayfair neighborhood to let police know that during a time where officers' conduct is under so much scrutiny, they are standing with the men and women in blue. During the rally, supporters showed pictures of fallen officers and cheered for those still on the job.

The Philadelphia Boys Choir and Chorale will travel to Cuba in August. The choir has traveled to Cuba twice before…once in 1999 and again in 2003. Musical Director Jeffrey Smith says with relations improving between the United States and Cuba, it seemed like the perfect time for a return trip. The kids will perform throughout the country, including the American Embassy. The 95 members and staff will be in Cuba from August 10 through August 21.

Officials and volunteers in Bucks County believe they have solved the cat problem that has plagued Core Creek Park in Middletown Township for years. With well over 500 cats in the park, it took about a week to lure them into humane traps that had been set throughout the park. Volunteers took them down to the Women’s Humane Society and to the SPCA in Philadelphia, where they were all neutered and they all had chips put in their ears so rangers could tell if it was one of their cats. The majority of cats were abandoned domestics and have been put up for adoption. A little over a hundred pure feral cats have been returned to the park and are fed three times a day by trained volunteers.
