Thousands of people lined up at the Independence Visitors' Center to wish the U.S. a happy birthday… in a delicious way. As with any good birthday party, the focus was on the cake. John Kawash is a cake decorator for Termini Brothers and says the cake is a showcase for all. Kawash said Termini Brothers and the Visitor Center has teamed up for the past five years. The tradition continued on Monday as they gave away slices of the five tier cake, and 22-hundred cupcakes decorated in red, white, and blue and arranged to look like a giant waving flag. A Betsy Ross reenactor led the singing, and the doors opened to a waiting crowd. The Visitors Center president Jim Cuorato said it’s become a popular event.

If your usual elevator ride is sluggish and crowded, your smartphone could offer relief.
It’s part of a system that recently was demonstrated in Philadelphia, and could be destined for buildings new and old. Don’t worry about pressing that up, down, or floor number button. Your phone has already summoned an elevator and it knows where you’re going. Schindler Group’s myPORT app, is all about the algorithms, which adjust the lift schedules every tenth of a second based on who needs to ride and where as they walk through the main door. Employees and visitors gain access by typing a PIN or using the phone’s fingerprint reader. That’s checked against the building security system. And it’s not just for office complexes.

If you’re taking out federal student loans, it’s now cheaper than it was even days ago. There’s good news for college students needing federal student loans,as the interest rate has dropped, so you’ll be paying back less. As of July 1st, any loans taken out July 1st or later, the rate will go down a little more than a half a percent. The rate reduction could save thousands. A student taking out a $25,000 loan will save about $37 a month and the rates are locked in for the life of the loan.
