City Hall Vigil, Summer Reading Program, Flag Day

Here in Philadelphia hundreds of people gathered at City Hall for a candlelight vigil remembering the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting. Mayor Jim Kenney let the group know the city of Philadelphia stands in solidarity with them. During the vigil the crowd lit candles, held a moment of silence and read the names of those killed in that night club massacre.

The Philadelphia Free Library has kicked off its summer reading program. This year, it's offering kids the chance to chat about their books with a prominent Philadelphian. Mayor Jim Kenney has offered his ears to kids in the library's summer reading program via a recorded phone line, where young readers can leave their synopses, reviews and critiques. The goal is six books - and they hope to get 50,000 kids participating - not that every child will call the mayor -but he hopes a lot will. The number is 267-689-7323 or 267-689-READ. You can sign up at any library or at the Free Library of Philadelphia website.

Ceremonies are taking place all over the country Tuesday to properly dispose of old American Flags that have been collected throughout the year. A tattered American Flag must be burned, not thrown in the trash. The American Legion holds a ceremony where volunteers explain where the flags have flown then present them for disposal.
