Philadelphia Eagles Excuses Getting Old

Nine games into the season, and the Philadelphia Eagles are 3-6. Andy Reid promoted Juan Castillo from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator, and now the defense has gone from subpar last year, to awful this year.

The Eagles have blown five fourth-quarter leads. Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals and fourth quarter collapse was tied to penalties, mental errors, and physical mistakes.

Regarding the defense, Andy Reid says we have to fix it. Castillo says he, himself, has to do a better job. These explanations are growing very thin with the Eagles fan base.

Got any ideas?

The Eagles have blown five fourth-quarter leads, none worse than Sunday's collapse against Cardinals backup quarterback John Skelton. The Eagles had two fourth-quarter leads and lost them both, allowing Skelton to throw for 166 yards in the fourth quarter alone.

They did it with penalties (Nnamdi Asomugha's lining up offsides on third down to help extend the Cardinals' tying touchdown drive), with mental errors (a coverage mix-up that left rookie safety Jaiquawn Jarrett chasing Larry Fitzgerald on a 37-yard pass that set up the winning touchdown), and with physical mistakes (Kurt Coleman's missing a tackle on the game-winning score).

"Once we're getting down or things aren't going good, it's almost like we're just expecting it to stay that way," said defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins. "We just can't seem to dig ourselves out of a funk."

"We have to fix it," Reid said. He was asked if the end-of-game collapses reflect Castillo's inexperience. "No, we all have a piece of this, starting with me."

"I've got to do a better job, simple as that," Castillo said.

Did he really intend to have Jarrett, making his first start, cover Fitzgerald one-on-one on third and 10 with 2 minutes, 55 seconds left in the game?

"No comment," Castillo said.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles allowed touchdown drives of 89 and 87 yards, the Cardinals' two longest of the game. Skelton, in his sixth career start, threw for 315 yards and three TDs, two in the final quarter. His previous career high was 222 yards.
