North Wales Shooting, Washington Square Explosion, Zika Awareness Day

Authorities in Montgomery County say a 67-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon. Police responded to reports of domestic disturbance at a home near 6th Street and East Montgomery Avenue in North Wales. Arriving officers found the victim dead in the garage with a gunshot wound to the torso. A suspect is in custody.

An underground explosion in Washington Square West rattled people out of their beds early Sunday morning, just 12 hours after a similar incident Saturday outside 30th Street Station. A PECO spokeswoman said the issue at 6th and Pine Streets stemmed from an underground cable overheating, which built up pressure and caused manhole covers to fly off. PECO shut off power to 50 nearby homes, while crews worked throughout the day and night to repair the damaged cable. Fortunately, no one was hurt in either of these explosions.

Delaware’s Department of Health and Social Services has declared Monday: “Zika Awareness Day.” Doctor Awele Maduka-Ezeh, state medical director with the Division of Public Health, says even though there has been no mosquito transmission of the Zika virus in the nation, it’s important to maintain vigilance. Precautions are basically the same as avoiding mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus: use mosquito repellent, reduce standing water around your home so mosquitoes can’t breed and wear long sleeves if possible.
