Villanova's Matt Szczur chooses MLB

Many college students in their senior year around this time of year are busy with interviews trying to land a job once they graduate. Giving the current job market, those opportunities are slim and many future grads may not even get a job in their field or one at all right away. However, Matt Szczur had the luxury of entering this year knowing he had at least one job, and a pretty good chance at another, both that would make him very rich. That's not to mention that those two jobs were proverbially fun and games. The question was to return to the MLB and play in the Chicago Cubs organization or to enter the NFL draft where he was projected to be picked in the 4th or 5th round and probably make a team's roster.

Sensing that Szczur would go to the NFL, the Cub's offered him $1.5 million to play baseball and leave football behind. He took that offer. That means no Senior Bowl for Szczur, and no NFL combine and draft, but Matt is not complaining too much, he had to choose one of the two. He'll report to spring training in February. Until then, he's got a few more weeks of college.

If we all had such tough decisions to make.

Go Matt. It's been a pleasure watching him play. Clearly at a different level than those around him, similar to watching Brian Westbrook play college ball. The Cubs are fortunate to have such a competitor on the team.
