You should be able to choose your TV set-top box the same way you pick a smartphone. That's one argument being made by proponents of a push for competition in the market long locked-up by the cable companies. A vote by the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday in favor of the plan would open the matter for public discussion and rules mandating open standards for the technology. Instead of paying monthly cable box fees to Verizon $12/month for a Fios box or handing over $10/month to Comcast for an Xfinity X1 box, you could pay once for a device — from, say, Google — which would give you traditional video and streaming content from those cable giants alongside other companies and content creators.

Police say a man is dead after he was shot several times late Wednesday night in the Cobbs Creek section of Philadelphia. This happened just after 11 p.m. on the 300 block of South 52nd Street. Police say arriving officers found a 31-year-old man shot multiple times in his legs and back. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Police say the victim appeared to be shot at close range, just outside his car. Police are now questioning witnesses and say there were nearby surveillance cameras they can review. An investigation is ongoing.

In a highly anticipated event, Caitlyn Jenner appeared on the University of Pennsylvania campus on Wednesday night. Students lined up to hear from Jenner. The event was sold out. Jenner appeared alongside author Buzz Bissinger, who wrote the Vanity Fair story chronicling her transition. Jenner was originally scheduled to speak at Penn in the fall, but due to her transition and all the publicity, she asked that the event be rescheduled.
