Germantown Academy Swimmer Abuse, River Trail Watch Group Forms, City Controller Ladder 8 Fire Audit

A former swimmer who once had hopes of qualifying for Olympic trials is suing Germantown Academy, alleging the school tolerated "physical and mental abuse" and allowed the swim coach to stay on despite numerous claims of abuse during his tenure. The swimmer, named John Doe in the suit, started training with Germantown Academy in 2012 when he was in 8th grade. The suit alleges then-coach Dick Shoulberg pitted him against another swimmer. Attorney Brian Kent says that other swimmer abused him mentally and physically.

A group of about 50 users and neighbors of the Schuylkill River Trail came out Thursday night for a meeting to organize a “trail watch” group. 2nd district Councilman Kenyatta Johnson organized the effort in response to recent attacks and thefts on the trail by groups of roving teenagers. Trail enthusiasts shared concerns about the recent attacks and see the Schuylkill River Trail watch group as a way to take back some control. Just like a town watch, the trail watchers will walk in groups at different times of day keeping an eye out for trouble. For information about how to get involved, you can contact Councilman Kenyatta Johnson’s office.

A new report is casting a critical eye on a just abolished Philadelphia Fire Department policy. Fire stations “brown outs,” were formally eliminated on Thursday, but an audit by the city controller lists troubling new information about the response time on the night a firefighter was killed. Inside this burning home, early on the morning of December 9, 2014,firefighter Joyce Craig perished in the smoke and flames. The audit reveals ladder 8 did not arrive on scene until over eighteen minutes after they were dispatched to the fire. The delay was even more puzzling because, as the audit shows, Ladder 8 had what should have been a straight 1.9 mile trip from its station to the scene. The audit says investigators were looking into statements that “Ladder 8 became lost en-route to the fire. Firefighters on duty that morning may have been unfamiliar with their community.” The report questions if the department’s “Firefighter Rotation Policy” resulted in 4 firefighters not totally familiar with the neighborhood being assigned to ladder 8. Mayor Kenney announced the rotation policy, which brought involuntary transfers from station to station, is no longer in effect. Auditors say the fire department has refused to publicly release its own investigation, which sources say was completed months ago.
