Center City Four Alarm Fire, Christie Vetoes Smoking Bill, Wolf Proud Of First Year In Office

On one of winter's coldest nights, nearly two dozen Center City residents weren't allowed to return home, displaced after last night's four alarm fire ripped through a multi-family, two story residence in Center City. The evacuated residents are now in the care of the Red Cross. For those living inside the 21 occupied units of the building and the 2 homes next door, they are now being held at Trinity Church around the corner on 22nd and Spruce until they can find some place to go. The American Red Cross says it’s assisting seven families with food, clothing and lodging.

Gov. Chris Christie decided not to act Tuesday on a bill that would have boosted New Jersey’s smoking age to 21, keeping the age to buy tobacco products at 19. The bill, which passed the Democrat-led Legislature amid a surge in lobbying from the tobacco industry, would have fined retailers up to $1,000 if they sold cigarettes or other tobacco products, including e-cigarettes that are also known as “vapes,” to anyone 20 years old or younger. Underage smokers would have gone unpunished.

Despite an ongoing budget battle, Governor Wolf says he’s proud of his first year in office.
Democratic Governor Tom Wolf took the oath of office one year ago. That year has been largely spent butting heads with a Republican-controlled legislature , but Wolf says he has no regrets. Pennsylvania remains without a complete budget, though the governor partially signed and partially vetoed a spending plan in December. Wolf points to an expansion of Medicaid, efforts to address the epidemic of heroin overdoses, and efforts at greater government transparency as examples of his first year achievements.
