Isis on iRadioPhilly Changes to Iris to Avoid Terror Association

What a difference one letter makes! iRadioPhilly has changed the name of our Pop/Hits radio station "Isis" to "Iris" to avoid negative perceptions associated with the terrorist group, ISIS.

When iRadioPhilly launched the Isis station in 2010, the female focused station was named for the Egyptian Goddess, Isis, worshiped as the ideal mother and wife. However in the last few years the terror group ISIS has captured headlines, prompting iRadioPhilly to make the change.

In keeping with the goddess namesake concept, iRadioPhilly has selected the Greek Goddess, Iris for the new radio station name. In Greek mythology, Iris is the personification of the rainbow and links the gods to humanity. In polling listeners, iRadioPhilly found the name Iris to be associated with many positive images, and most importantly had nothing to do with terror. Iris is known as an attractive name for a girl. In fact, one of the most popular songs on the station is "Iris" by Goo Goo Dolls. Iris is also associated with the colorful part of the human eye surrounding the pupil. The Iris flower is a colorful plant that also takes its name from the Greek word for "rainbow" and the goddess.

After collecting feedback from listeners on social media and market surveys iRadioPhilly recognized it had to change the brand. iRadioPhilly is confident listeners will agree that "Iris" is a suitable new name for our radio station that feature the likes of Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and Nickelback.
