Kathleen Kane Hearing, Powerball Largest Jackpot, Blue Mountain Opens Today

The spokesman for Kathleen Kane says the embattled attorney general is not expected to testify at a Senate hearing next week that could set the stage for a vote on whether to remove her from office. A Senate committee has been examining whether Kathleen Kane can function as attorney general with a suspended law license. Kane has a chance to make a case for herself in advance of a possible Senate vote to remove her. A spokeswoman for the Senate majority leader says the hearing is expected to proceed whether or not Kane or a representative appears.

A lottery official says the estimated prize for this weekend’s Powerball drawing is the largest jackpot of any lottery game in U.S. history. Texas Lottery spokeswoman Kelly Cripe says Saturday’s drawing will be worth about $675 million. That’s because no one matched the numbers drawn for Wednesday night’s estimated $500 million jackpot. The previous record was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot won in March 2012. Powerball is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

With frigid temperatures now gripping the region, snow guns have been working overtime since the weekend and the slopes in the Poconos are now white and ready for the start of the ski season. At Blue Mountain Ski Resort, last-minute preparations are underway for Thursday’s opening, where it’s also a beginning for the hundreds of temporary employees who work there. Blue Mountain had only two days of skiing in mid-December, but rain and temperatures in the 60s quickly melted the man-made snow. If January temperatures stay between 28 and 32 degrees, crews can and will continue to make snow.
