God Bless America No More, Kenney Inaugural Day, New Camden County Board Members

Staffers at Glenview Elementary School say it became a daily ritual for students to say "God bless America" after the morning recital of the Pledge of Allegiance as a way to honor first responders after 9/11. But Principal Sam Sassano says the ACLU sent the school board attorney a letter challenging the recital of "God Bless America" as unconstitutional. Rather than engage in an expensive legal battle, Sassano sent an email to parents over the weekend saying the school will look for alternate ways to honor those in the September 11th tragedy.

Mayor Kenney took the oath of office to become Philadelphia's 99th mayor. His priorities are fighting crime and soon he'll have a new ally in the next police commissioner, Richard Ross. A few hours after he took the oath of office, Kenney attended a fundraiser to promote another priority: schools. The mayor also signed six executive orders, including the creation of a Chief Diversity Officer and an order that limits how city officials cooperate with federal immigration officials.

Monday was Inauguration Day for most local towns and in Camden County, it was time to swear in new members of the board. For the 172nd time, county freeholders reorganized their board, swearing-in two new members: William Moen, Jr. and Susan Shin Angulo. The annual meeting was held inside the Gloucester Township campus of Camden County College. Director Louis Cappelli Jr. says this year’s goal is to expand on job growth. He says the board will also focus on addiction treatment. Camden County holds 37 towns within its borders.
