Three Philadelphia Shootings, NJ Gun Control, PA State Budget

A total of four people were shot, two of them fatally, in three separate incidents late Wednesday night throughout Philadelphia. Police say a 27-year-old man was shot in the face just after 11 p.m. near Germantown Avenue and West Westmoreland Street in North Philadelphia. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Also around 11 p.m., a shooting occurred in the 700 block of South 60th Street in West Philadelphia. Police say a man had no identification on him was shot and killed. And just after 10:30 p.m. a double shooting occurred in the 1800 block of North Bucknell Street in North Philadelphia. Both victims were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

As the country comes to grips with the carnage in San Bernardino, the New Jersey Assembly is scheduled to take up a bid to override the gubernatorial veto of a gun control measure within the state. The bill requires law enforcement and doctors be informed if a mentally ill person seeks to have their health records expunged so they could purchase a gun. If they succeed, it would be the first time a Christie veto is overridden in both houses of the legislature and could be viewed as a blow to the Governor’s quest for the Republican Presidential nomination.

Wednesday marked yet another day without any details to be had on a state budget deal that the governor and legislative leaders hope to enact in the next few weeks. At a Wednesday press conference, Governor Tom Wolf said “we have to be close” to a budget, but declined to put out what he called an “artificial date” as to when it might get done. But in the continuing absence of details, it is hard to see the finish line in sight. Meanwhile, Governor Wolf says the administration has learned that it can release federal funds designated for Pennsylvania’s cash-starved domestic violence shelters with the state now into month number six with no budget.
