Charter School Applications, Wolf Signs Labor Dispute Bill, Remi Justice Rescue Fundraiser

The Philadelphia School District is collecting applications to open nearly two dozen new charter schools. Twenty-two operators have submitted letters of intent, including existing operators KIPP and String Theory - and a first-time application from Quincy Greene to establish a high school emphasizing inclusion for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teens. Evaluations will begin after the application deadline of November 15. The School Reform Commission is expected to vote on theapplications in February. The SRC authorized six of 39 new charter applications last year. Philadelphia has 83 charters now. For years, the financially-strapped district approved no new charters. The district was required by the 2014 cigarette tax law to accept new charter applications.

Governor Tom Wolf has signed into law a bill that would prohibit parties involved in labor disputes from using tactics such as stalking, harassing or making threats of mass destruction. The sponsor of the measure characterizes it as a "public safety" issue, but during debate on the bill as legislators voted on it, Democrats denounced the measure as an effort to make strikes, picket lines and demonstrations more difficult for organized labor.

Medical bills have been piling up to care for Remi, the abused dog found on the side of the road in Chester last week. Russ Harper is with Justice Rescue, and found the pit bull, severely injured and 16 pounds underweight. Justice Rescue finds abused and neglected dogs, and cares for them, from conviction of the abuser to adoption of the pup. Conshocken’s Southern Cross Restaurant held a fundraiser to raise the cash to care for Remi. To help Justice Rescue, and Remi, please visit: http://www.justice-rescue.com/justice/Default.aspx
