Papal City Restoration, Papal Positive Crowds, Papal Hospital Coverage

Now that the hundreds of thousands of pilgrims are making their journey back home following the papal visit, the rush is on to get Philadelphia cleaned up and back to normal. The State Police were moving in formation marching down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the applause of a grateful crowd. The work has started and will likely last for days, but so many came from so far away and are now leaving with a lifetime memory.

Hundreds of thousands lined Ben Franklin Parkway from Eakins Oval to LOVE Park Sunday for the historic Papal Mass. The day began in the wee hours of the morning for many. And after 3 p.m., Pope Francis arrived, waving and smiling in his Popemobile. Before mass, Pope Francis made his way around the Ben Franklin Parkway kissing babies and children along the way. For people leaving the Parkway they said they can’t believe mass is over, the day had come and gone but for some who didn’t even make it inside, they said the day was still worth it.

During the Papal visit hospitals in the no traffic zone had to overcome many difficult challenges, but they managed to pull off some impressive feats – including taking care of special deliveries and organ transplants. Debbie Husmann made it to Jefferson University Hospital via a NJ State Police escort of the JeffSTAT ambulance for a kidney transplant that was five years in the making. Over at Pennsylvania Hospital A’Lena Scurry was having her first baby during the Popes first day in Philly. She wasn’t due until October 1, but nature called and the National Guard helped get her to the hospital from University City.
