Evacuation from Juniata House Fire, Pennypack Home Invasion, Camden County Breeding Mills Resolution

A fast-moving fire forced residents out of their homes overnight in the Juniata section of Philadelphia. The blaze began just after 11 p.m. Thursday on the 4000 block of Ormond Street. Officials say the fire was placed under control in about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported. There's no word yet how many houses were impacted or the exact number of people displaced. Officials are still investigating a cause.

Police are investigating a home invasion in the Pennypack neighborhood of Northeast Philadelphia early Friday morning. This happened just after 1 a.m. on the 2800 block of Shipley Road. Police say a 33-year-old woman told them she heard a noise in the basement. She went down to investigate and found three men wearing masks. The woman then tells police one of the men put a towel over her head in the kitchen and pointed a gun at her while the other men ransacked the home. The victim believes $800 cash was the only thing taken.
The woman was not injured, police say. Either were her two children who were upstairs sleeping during the incident. It appears the robbers never entered their rooms. Police are now checking for fingerprints as the investigation continues.

Camden County Freeholders adopted a resolution Thursday evening that immediately bans pets stores from accepting and selling animals from breeding mills. Freeholder Jeffrey Nash named the measure “Norman’s Law,” in honor of his own dog, obtained through the county animal shelter. “We are stating that, under the county law, you cannot pass an inspection if you’re selling these dogs.” says Nash. “As a practical matter, we can shut you down if you do.” Camden County is one of only a few counties that have a resolution banning pet stores from selling animals from breeding mills. “We would like to see more rescued pets get into pet stores, rather than puppy mills,” said animal activist Elaine Braslow. Several towns are already on board. If a pet store ignores the resolution, they could have to pay a fine or be shut down by the county. Other counties have already inquired about the resolution, according to a county spokesman.
