Inmate Papal Artwork Display, Made In America, Strawberry Mansion Home Invasion

A non-profit dedicated to showcasing the artwork of inmate artists opened a new exhibit at a Germantown parish in honor of the upcoming visit from Pope Francis. Titled “A Man for Our Times: Seeking Justice & Redemption, Shining Hope & Love” — the exhibit is inside the sanctuary of the 150-year-old St. Vincent De Paul Parish. Ann Marie Kirk, executive director of Art for Justice, curated the exhibit, selecting nine religious-themed works by inmate artists Daniel Gwynn — who is on deathrow, and by Charles Lawson – a lifer at Graterford. The exhibit is available before and after mass at St. Vincent. There are also pieces featured at the Friend’s Meeting House at 15th and Cherry Streets.

We are now just weeks away from the Pope’s visit to Philadelphia, and this weekend’s 4th annual Made In America concert on the Ben Franklin Parkway will be a bit of a test run for city responders. More than 50,000 people will pack the Parkway for the annual music festival. Mayor Nutter’s Press Secretary Mark McDonald says they will use a grid system to help first responders get to people who may need help faster. He says events like this helps them work out the kinks.

Philadelphia Police are investigating a home invasion that took place early Friday morning in the Strawberry Mansion section of the city. Police say two men entered the home on the 3100 block of West Montgomery Drive around 3:30 a.m. The suspects got away with $6,000 in cash and laptops, according to police. Police say the 66-year-old man and 46-year-old woman who were inside the home at the time of the incident were not injured. There is no description of the suspects at this time.
