NWS Heat Warning, Papal SEPTA Passes On Sale Today, Antman Tops Box Office

Hazy, hot and humid conditions continue throughout the Philadelphia region. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Philadelphia and the surrounding communities through 8 p.m. Monday. Forecasters say temperatures in the mid 90s will combine with humidity to make it feel like it is more than 100 degrees. People are urged to avoid strenuous activity if possible, watch for signs of heat exhaustion, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water. Officials ask people to check on older friends and relatives; others at risk include those with chronic medical conditions, pregnant women, and small children.

Special passes for SEPTA regional rail service during the visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia at the end of September go on sale today. The one-day passes cost $10 a piece and will be sold only online through a link at the transit agency’s website. The passes will only be good at a specific station and for two specific morning departure times, either 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. or 8:30 a.m. to noon each day. Return trips to the stations will begin at 5:30 p.m. and continue until midnight each day. No other fares, including Trail Passes or cash, will be accepted on the regional rails that last weekend of September. SEPTA plans to have only 18 stations open along the regional rails so it can run express-style service that weekend into the city. All other stations will be closed during the weekend. The Airport Line, however, will operate modified inbound and outbound service throughout the weekend. And, SEPTA will limit the number of passes it will sell for each day – Sept. 26 and Sept. 27 – to only 175,000 per day.
PATCO also begins selling one-day passes today through its website. Those passes go for $5 a day.
PATCO says it will honor Freedom cards already held by those who have them. If you were planning on using SEPTA buses, trolleys and subways on the papal weekend, you’ll be able to get passes for those trips online starting next Monday.

The little superhero, Ant-Man, was big at the box office. The Marvel Comics-inspired crime-fighter saga starring Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas earned an estimated $58-million on its weekend debut to take over first place. That toppled last weekend’s leader – the animated blockbuster, Minions – into the second spot. It took in another $50-million as it passed the $200-million mark. In third was the weekend’s other new major mainstream release, Trainwreck, from director Judd Apatow, with Amy Schumer and Bill Hader. It opened to a $30-million take. And rounding out the top five were holdovers Inside Out and Jurassic World with $12-million and $11-million, respectively.
