Wolf Vetoes PA Budget, NWS Honey Brook Tornado Study, SRC Adopts Budget

Pennsylvania will start the new budget year without a spending plan. Governor Tom Wolf wasted no time announcing Tuesday night he will veto the entire budget. The legislature also sent Wolf two other major pieces of legislation, bills that would privatize liquor sales and would overhaul pensions for school and state employees. The governor has previously indicated opposition to both but said he’ll withhold his veto for now pending a review of those bills.

The National Weather Service will be heading to Honey Brook, Chester County later today to determine whether or not a Tornado touched down in the township Tuesday. Numerous videos of what witnesses believe to be a tornado were posted to Youtube and social media accounts, but an official determination can only be made by NWS and that won’t happen until later in the day. National Weather Service officials will also be heading to Lehigh Valley today to investigate possible tornado activity there as well.

With no state budget in sight, the School Reform Commission Tuesday night had to cross its fingers in hope as it adopted a spending plan for next year. Philadelphia principals have already outlined how they would spend the extra $159 million Governor Wolf’s budget would provide. But with no indication when the governor and Republican-controlled legislature will agree on a budget, the SRC approved a $2.6 billion spending plan with an asterisk — saying that extra money won’t be spent unless it’s in the final state budget.
