Old City Apartment Debate, Crop Duster Crash, Mosquito Population Strong

A committee of the Philadelphia Historical Commission today will weigh in on a developer's plans for a ten-story apartment building in Old City — on the same block as the Betsy Ross House. PMC Property Group wants to turn a parking lot at 218 Arch Street in Old City into a ten-story apartment building with some first-floor retail and two levels of parking underground. Jonathan Farnham, executive director of the Historical Commission, says the project's size poses concern. The Commission's architectural committee will debate the idea today, and then forward its recommendation to the full commission for a vote on July 10th.

A crop duster made a crash landing in Pemberton, Burlington County Monday. This happened around 7:30 p.m. on the 100 block of North Pemberton Road. The pilot had to land the plane without landing gear after some issues with the gear. The pilot suffered minor injuries. Nobody on the ground was hurt. The FAA will investigate.

Crews in Camden County spent Monday night in Cherry Hill spraying for mosquitoes. Experts warn this year could be one of the worst because of the humid temperatures and rainfall. Freeholder Ian Leonard oversees the mosquito abatement program in Camden County and says he expects to see mosquitoes for months. Eastern Pennsylvania also has its share of problems. Just last week, a mosquito tested positive for West Nile Virus in Chester County. Neighborhood spraying should stop any spread of West Nile Virus, but if you are still concerned, it’s best to carry a bottle of mosquito repellent.
