SRC Replaces Substitute Teachers, Philadelphia Distilling Moving, Northeast Republican Conference

Some 1,000 substitute teachers in Philadelphia just lost their jobs with the school district. The School Reform Commission voted unanimously to outsource the jobs to a New Jersey company. A $34 million contract was awarded to Source4Teachers of Cherry Hill. The District's chief talent officer Naomi Wyatt says it’s needed because budget cuts and hiring rules have made managing subs so difficult that some 400 classrooms a day don't have teachers. The teachers union called the move part of the ongoing attempt to privatize public education and says it’s considering an Unfair Labor Practice complaint.

The Philadelphia craft distillery best known for Bluecoat gin is getting new digs this fall. The move from the Northeast to Fishtown will bring a new way to experience the spirits. Philadelphia Distilling will make its new home on Frankford Avenue. Company president Andrew Auwerda says there will be a tasting room, bar, restaurant, store and event space — with Bluecoat and their other spirits front and center.

The 2015 Northeast Republican Leadership Conference kicked off it's three-day conference, right here in Philadelphia. Former New York Governor George Pataki was the first of many Presidential candidates scheduled to speak over the next few days. Other speakers include Karl Rove, Scott Walker and Chris Christie. Pennsylvania GOP Chairman Rob Gleason says the event is here because Pennsylvania will be a battleground state in the next election.
