Free Library Cooking Tips, 911 Charges Rise, All City Orchestra on Italy Tour

Culinary literacy took center stage at the Free Library of Philadelphia Tuesday night. The class gave people healthy and sustainable summertime cooking tips. Chef William Ambrose with the Cancer Treatment Centers of America led the cooking demonstration, which he says showcased easy to do recipes. Heather Greaves with the Cancer Treatment Centers of America says they’re also trying to teach about the benefits of buying local and organic.

The Pennsylvania Senate unanimously approved a measure Tuesday to impose up to an additional 65 cents per phone line and an extra $52 per household to help counties pay for the growing cost of their 911 emergency communications centers. The bill goes back to the House, where an earlier version passed last month. For counties, the cost of call centers is rising as new wireless technology means more people call them and it is more expensive to track the location of the call.

For nine days beginning on Saturday, music lovers in Italy will get a taste of Philadelphia’s best. But it’s not the renowned Philadelphia Orchestra on tour this time. It’s Philadelphia’s All City Orchestra – the school district’s orchestra.
Five Italian cities – Florence, Perugia, Assisi, Monticatini, Lucca – will stage concerts. But the tour begins in Rome. This All City Orchestra is an ensemble of 115 student and alumni musicians from across the public school district. The best of the best music programs. The repertoire is an orchestral mix from classical Verdi, to movie theme composer, Morriconi. If you want to experience the music, the All City Orchestra will perform a free farewell concert on Thursday, June 18th at 7:30 p.m. at the Kimmel Center.
