Rafferty AG Candidacy, Keystone Exam Delay, Ponzio Sanitary Door Opener

More than sixteen months before the election, embattled Attorney General Kathleen Kane is getting a challenger. Suburban Philadelphia Republican state Senator John Rafferty is scheduled to announce his candidacy for attorney general this week. Republican Rafferty ran for attorney general in 2012, but bowed out when then-Governor Tom Corbett supported David Freed, who lost to Democrat Kane. Expect a crowded field in the race for Pennsylvania attorney general.

The state Senate has unanimously approved a bill that would put off for two more years the use of tests as part of public school graduation requirements in Pennsylvania. The bill to delay the use of Keystone Exams as a graduation requirement from 2017 until 2019 sailed through the Senate, getting full approval less than a week after it passed committee. When the Senate Education Committee advanced the bill last Tuesday, the ranking Democrat – Andy Dinniman of suburban Philadelphia – said there were several bills pending to deal with Keystone Exams, but said he supported this one because it had the best chance.

A hands-free way to open a restroom door called a “Sanitary Door Opener,” now exists. It allows you to open the restroom door with your forearm. Nick Fifis, a partner at Ponzio’s Diner in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, said he first saw the device at a restaurant trade show. The idea is to put your forearm in a “U” shaped hook, and pull the door open, so you don’t get your newly washed hands dirty. The device has been installed at Ponzio’s for about a year, but not everyone recognized it.
