Wawa Day Means Free Coffee, Kensington Hit and Run Child Dies, Market East Redesign

April 16th is now known as Wawa Day in Philadelphia, marking the day that the company's first convenience store opened. Wawa anticipates giving away more than 1.5-million cups of free coffee today to all customers chain-wide. Also, at an event today with Mayor Michael Nutter, the company will unveil plans for the new Center City location at Broad and Walnut Streets.

The child involved in a hit-and-run Monday night in Kensington has died. Police say two-year-old David Alicea and his 19-year-old mother, Josephine Rivera, were struck while crossing the street on the 2700 block of Mascher Street around 7 p.m. Police are still looking for the driver of the striking vehicle, described as a newer model four-door white Sedan. The city is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

A plan is coming together to revive the Market East District in Philadelphia, where the Gallery is set to undergo a two-year, top-to-bottom, $325-million redesign that makes it more accessible along that three block stretch of the Market East corridor. There will be a mix of 125-luxury and moderate brand retailers, as well as food and entertainment options. Much of the mall will be closed during the two-year demolition and construction phase, and commuters will only be able to access public transit at street level locations. PREIT will get public financing for the makeover. The city of Philadelphia and the Commonwealth will put up more than $90-million, but in return, city officials say it will generate jobs and higher tax revenue. PREIT and its partner, Macerich Company, which specialize in shopping malls and shopping centers, are expected to invest $235-million into the project. The Gallery will be rebranded as the Fashion Outlets of Philadelphia at Market East.
