Overbrook Dog Walker Killed, Revel Sale, Pope Francis Second Anniversary

Police are investigating after they say a man was fatally shot while walking his dog Thursday night in Philadelphia's Overbrook neighborhood. This happened just after 8:30 p.m. on the 6400 block of Woodcrest Avenue. Police say they found the 51-year-old victim unconscious in the street after responding to reports of shots being fired. He was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead a short time later. The victim was found with a flashlight in one hand and the dogs leash in the other. The dog remained by the victim's side until police arrived. Police believe the motive is robbery as the investigation continues. The search for the gunman continues as police ask any witnesses to step forward. Anyone with information can call police at 215-686-TIPS.

The judge presiding over the Revel bankruptcy sale expects to rule Friday on whether to approve the $82 million deal with Florida developer Glenn Straub. But day long proceedings suggest this will not be a slam-dunk decision for the judge. The judge is weighing, among other things, whether she even has jurisdiction to rule given appeals of her previous orders in the case. But she makes it clear she understands the urgency here. Summer is just around the corner. Wells Fargo is ready to pull the plug on funding day to day Revel costs. And while two different entities are expressing interest at the 11th hour, neither one has made a firm offer nor put down a dime of deposit. Anyone who can put up a better offer to Straub’s full cash in escrow bid has until the end of the month to do it.

UPDATE: Federal bankruptcy Judge Gloria Burns announced that she does not believe that she has jurisdiction to rule on Straub's offer and can't decide on the $82 million offer given all of the appeals.

Pope Francis will be arriving in Philadelphia at the end of September, capping a three-city tour that will be his first to the United States. Today, however, the Pope marks the second anniversary of his election as leader of the world’s of more than one-billion Roman Catholics. When the newly-minted Pope Francis stepped out onto the balcony above the entrance to St. Peter’s Basilica two years ago, he was greeted by a cheering crowd of thousands. Many observers say he has managed to grow that “rock-star like status” as the leader of a church that was, at the time of his election, pummeled by clergy sex abuse scandals, and a Vatican in political and financial turmoil.
