Missing Marines and Soldiers in Florida, FiOS Drops Weather Channel, AG Budget Hearings

Seven Marines and four soldiers were missing early Wednesday after an Army helicopter crashed during a night training exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle. Base officials said the Marines are part of a Camp Lejeune-based special operations group and the soldiers were from a Hammond, Louisiana-based National Guard unit. The helicopter was reported missing around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and search and rescue crews found debris from the crash around 2 a.m. Wednesday, Eglin spokesman Andy Bourland said. Bourland said the Army helicopter took off from a nearby airport in Destin and joined other aircraft in the training exercise. The Ch-60 helicopter went down during a routine training mission on a remote swath of beach between Pensacola and Destin. The beach is owned by the military and is used for test missions.

Verizon says dropping The Weather Channel was a ‘business decision’ — but will it cause some customers to drop FiOS? Verizon says you don’t need Jim Cantore or Sam Champion to tell you what it’s going to do outside when there are so many other ways to get the weather. FiOS instead will carry The AccuWeather Network , which Verizon says will allow it to “reduce overall content costs.” But The Weather Channel says it’s disappointed and was caught completely off-guard. Hundreds of people have signed a petition for Verizon to reverse the move.

The state Supreme Court will hear arguments today in the attempt by Attorney General Kathleen Kane to nullify a grand jury presentment that recommends charges against her. On Tuesday, Kane’s troubles were largely ignored as she appeared before state lawmakers to discuss her proposed budget for the coming fiscal year. Kathleen Kane’s appearance at House budget hearings came not only on the eve of the Supreme Court arguments in her case, but on the same day that more charges were filed by Philadelphia DA Seth Williams in a sting operation involving Philadelphia lawmakers.
