Powerball 5th Largest Jackpot, Over 50 Alcohol Study, Bucks County Playhouse Auditions

Nearly half a billion dollars is up for grabs tonight in the Powerball drawing. It's the fifth largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history. The Powerball jackpot stands at $485 million dollars. Lottery officials say booming sales meant raising the big prize from $450 million dollars yesterday. Pennsylvania lottery officials say tickets were selling at a rate of about 2,300 tickets per minute yesterday. 9:59 tonight is the deadline for the 11pm drawing.
The cash value: $327 million bucks. Not bad at all. Your chance of taking all of that money home is 1 in 175 million.

An interesting study has looked at alcohol intake and the health effects in people over the age of 50. The information was gained from the Health Survey For England, which looked at 53,000 participants and followed them for six to ten years. What the researchers found? There’s not much of an advantage to drinking alcohol over the age of 50. The survey found that people often don’t metabolize alcohol as well at that age, and people in that age range often may take medications which interact with alcohol. The exception to those findings? One group did have some benefit: women over the age of 65. If women 65 and older drank 5 alcoholic beverages per week, they were 27% less likely to die during the study, compared to women who didn’t drink at all. Researchers are not sure why, but they do know that those who drank very little in the years leading up to the age of 50 tended to fare better.

The Bucks County Playhouse on Sunday will host auditions for this summer’s youth company. It’s five weeks of intense training with outreach programs, which leads to performing in Aladdin for two weeks on the Playhouse stage. The program comes at no cost, but you need to register ahead of time. The information is on the Playhouse’s website.
