Coffee vs. Skin Cancer, Market Street East Digital Sign, Love Park Changes

According to The Journal of the National Cancer Institute, people who drink coffee on a regular basis, four or more cups a day, had a 20% lower risk for developing the deadliest form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma, than those who drank less coffee. The same did not hold true for decaffeinated coffee drinkers. Malignant melanoma is the 5th most common cancer in the United States and the leading cause of skin cancer deaths. Coffee has been the subject of medical research quite a bit. In the past, researchers have found associations between coffee and protection against Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, depression, and diabetes.

There’s a new sign lighting up Market Street East in Center City. Part of the redevelopment of Market Street is a 14-foot-high digital sign at the corner of 7th street, on top of the Lits building and is the largest in the Mid-Atlantic region. The revenue from the sign’s ad space is going to help the Gallery do a lot of their renovation. Officials plan on expanding the sign so that it stretches to 8th street.

Major changes are coming to Love Park, and city officials are reviewing ideas from the public.
At a civic engagement meeting on Tuesday night, city officials shared what changes Philadelphians would like to see come to Love Park. Enable flexibility, make room for democracy, take the round building seriously, elevate maintenance and security, go green, facilitate gathering and connect to the parkway, were just some of the ideas brought up at the meeting. First deputy commissioner of parks and facilities Mark Focht says the city plans on making $14 million of changes and renovations to Love Park. They hope to start construction on the park early next year, and should be finished sometime in 2017.
