NJ Transportation Infrastructure, PA Deaf School Union Vote, SEPTA Open House

A master plan is in the works to fix and improve New Jersey's transportation infrastructure. A pair of experts in the field will provide the answers to the state senate president. All the talk these days about the almost empty Transportation Trust Fund has centered on money. State Senate President Steve Sweeney says this study will look into how best to spend that money. New Jersey has the longest commute times of any place in the country. There is no timetable on when he expects to have the “master plan” in hand.

The staff at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf votes today on whether they should be represented by a union. Staffers at the school will cast secret ballots to decide whether to be represented by the American Federation of Teachers. The private school in Germantown gets state money to teach deaf students. AFT-Pennsylvania President Ted Kirsch says the 150 teachers and support staff wanted more of a say over working conditions. The Head of School said in a statement that the school recognizes its employees’ legal right to unionize, and that it will continue to focus on student success whichever way the vote turns out.

SEPTA held an open house Wednesday, seeking public input on its new capital budget. The transit agency is telling riders that it has plans to take them from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’ more efficiently – and in style – in the coming years. SEPTA’S vehicle acquisition priorities begin with replacing older locomotives. Delivery of these vehicles will be toward the end of 2016 or 2017. The cost factor for 13 locomotives is $140-million. They’ll be followed by multi-level coach cars on the Regional Rail Lines. Details available at septa.org.
