Wolf Defeats Corbett, MacArthur Wins NJ U.S. House Seat, Boyle Wins U.S. Congressional Seat

Gov. Tom Corbett says he called Democratic Gov.-elect Tom Wolf to concede defeat and congratulated him on a well-fought fight for Pennsylvania's highest office. Appearing at a post-election gathering at a Pittsburgh hotel Tuesday night, the Republican governor thanked his supporters and said he’s proud his administration cut waste in the state government, reduced state spending for the first time in 40 years and put the state’s economy on the right track. Wolf’s victory makes Corbett the first governor to be denied a second term in the 40 years that governors have been allowed to serve two terms.

Republican Tom MacArthur has won New Jersey’s most closely watched and expensive U.S. House race, defeating Democrat Aimee Belgard. The 3rd District seat was open as Republican Jon Runyan decided not to seek re-election after serving two terms. National Democratic groups saw the race in a district stretching from the Philadelphia suburbs to the shore as one of their party’s best chances nationwide to pick up a House seat held by a Republican. MacArthur is the former mayor of the northern New Jersey town of Randolph. Belgard is a Burlington County freeholder.

Democrat Brendan Boyle has defeated Republican Carson Dee Adcock for an open congressional seat in suburban Philadelphia. The three-term state representative from Philadelphia topped the Montgomery County businessman on Tuesday night for the seat in Pennsylvania’s 13th Congressional District. The seat was vacated by five-term U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, who made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Boyle won the nomination for Schwartz’s seat in a four-way Democratic primary.
