Palmer Charter High School Closes, Vetri's New Lo Spiedo, SEPTA Strike Looms

Students arriving at a troubled Philadelphia charter high school Walter D. Palmer High School, Monday morning were told to go home, and informed that the school will be closing for good. Some parents got "robo" calls last night telling them that the school in Frankford, would be closed and that they shouldn't send their children there Monday. The school was approved for 675 students in grades K through 8, but enrolled 1,300 in grades K through 12. Founder Walter D. Palmer challenged the enrollment cap in court, but lost. And with the Philadelphia school district required to pay for only 675 students, Palmer didn’t know how long he could afford to keep the high school open. School District officials say the school was chartered to be a K-8, not a high school.

Marc Vetri opened his seventh restaurant, and it’s in the Navy Yard. Lo Spiedo. It’s Vetri’s newest entry to his list of Italian eateries. In Italian, Lo Spiedo means – the spit. Nearly everything is wood fired. At Lo Spiedo, there are 130 seats inside. A hundred more to come outside. Vetri opens with dinner seven days a week, lunch added Monday through Friday, and eventually, there will be brunch, and catering. Right now, Lo Spiedo is ready to handle “to-go” too.

The Transit Workers’ Local 234 voted unanimously on Sunday to authorize a SEPTA strike, which would impact the buses, trains and trolleys. Union leaders spoke out Monday afternoon. A decision on whether to strike could come as soon as Friday. SEPTA must use the next four days to close the gap on key issues like pension reform, and arbitration to avoid a strike. SEPTA leadership has said it is willing to continue negotiation.

Weather, October 28
