Philadelphia Vacant Buildings Bill, Taj Mahal Open Through November, PHL Ebola Concerns

A city council committee has signed off on a sweeping overhaul of how Philadelphia handles large vacant buildings. The changes were spurred by the deaths of firefighters Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeney in April 2012 battling a blaze that had begun in a vacant warehouse. Among the changes called for in the bill are better systems to make sure the large vacant properties are secured and inspected with information on the properties readily available in a database. The bill now goes to the full council for a vote.

Trump Entertainment Resorts is dropping its threat to close Atlantic City's Taj Mahal casino on Nov. 13. The company said Wednesday it still cannot guarantee the Taj Mahal won’t close by the end of the year, but added it will definitely remain open throughout the month of November. The company says it acted Wednesday in part to assure customers that a Culture Club concert scheduled for Nov. 28 will go on as planned.

Philadelphia airport workers, with the help of one of the largest service employee unions, held a press conference saying they are not properly equipped to prevent the spread of Ebola. The workers clean the planes and sometimes come in contact with human waste. Airport workers want equipment that health care workers would use. The workers are not employed by the airport — they are subcontracted by the airlines.

Weather, October 23

Cloudy with showers. High 57 in Center City.
