Pathmark Stabbing, Nutter Supports SRC Decision, Upper Darby Burglary Warning

Police are investigating after they say a 50-year-old man was stabbed inside of a supermarket in Northeast Philadelphia. It happened shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Pathmark store in the 800 block of Cottman Avenue. According to police, the man was stabbed twice in the face and is in critical but stable condition. An argument proceeded the attack in the produce section. The victim had made his way out to the parking lot when police arrived. Police say a man in his 40’s was arrested walking at nearby train tracks and a weapon was recovered.

Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter says the School Reform Commission was out of options when it suddenly canceled its contract with the teachers’ union yesterday morning. The mayor says he would have preferred a negotiated contract but supports the SRC’s decision to redirect funds to help children in classrooms. The School Reform Commission voted to require members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers to contribute to their health care benefits. The SRC’s sweeping, unilateral move will be challenged in court by the PFT.

Police in Upper Darby are alerting residents to a rash of burglaries in the area. There have reportedly been five incidents in the Stonehurst section of the Township. The suspect apparently uses first floor windows to enter the house in the early morning hours. Stolen items include cell phones, hand bags and electronics.

Weather, October 8

Mostly Sunny. High 72 in Center City.
