SRC Announcement 10am Friday, Hersheypark's Laff Track, Fattah Jr. Pleads Not Guilty

Now less than a month away from the start of school in Philadelphia, the School Reform Commission and Superintendent William Hite are scheduled to make an announcement Friday about the future of the cash-strapped school district. Hite has said that if the district did not fill an $81 million budget gap, school may not open on time in September and 1,300 employees could face layoffs. Now with another multi-million dollar deficit, possible layoffs loom and officials warn students could see class sizes up to 40 kids and cuts to programs and security. Friday’s announcement is scheduled for 10 a.m. at district headquarters in Spring Garden.

There is a unique new indoor roller coaster coming to Hersheypark next Spring. “Laff Trakk” is the first indoor, spinning, glow-coaster in the United States, according to a news release. The coaster will spin riders through a fun house that includes glimpses of colorful characters, a dizzy hall of mirrors, and a house of cards. Set to debut in May 2015, Laff Trakk — part dark ride, part family coaster — will deliver a different sensory experience with each trip.

Chaka Fattah Jr. formally pleaded not guilty in federal court today to charges of federal bank fraud, theft, and income tax evasion. Fattah Jr. offered no response when asked if he was concerned that his former roommate had pleaded guilty on federal fraud charges, indicating he would cooperate with prosecutors and potentially testify against him. Chaka Fattah Jr. remains free on bail as he awaits trial.

Weather, August 15

Sunny. High 78 in Center City.
