Malaysia Plane Shot Down, I-95 Ramp Opens, Obama Wilmington Visit

A Malaysia Airlines passenger plane carrying 298 people was shot down over eastern Ukraine on Thursday. Ukrainian officials said, and both the government and the pro-Russia separatists fighting in the region denied any responsibility for downing the aircraft. The bulk of the passengers were from the Netherlands -- 154 people. Next highest was 43 from Malaysia and 27 from Australia. U.S. military intelligence strongly suspects a surface-to-air missile brought down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 as it flew at 33,000 feet over the war zone in eastern Ukraine. Wreckage and bodies were spread over several miles along the flight path.

The new southbound Interstate 95 off-ramp at the Cottman Avenue (Route 73) Interchange in Philadelphia will open Friday morning. The exit ramp has been closed since April 30, 2013, when construction began to remove the former ramp and build a new, wider ramp slightly west of its former location. PennDOT says this new ramp was constructed as part of their $212.3 million project to rebuild and improve 1.4 miles of I-95 between Rhawn Street and Levick Street.

President Obama visited the Port of Wilmington Thursday as part of a pre-scheduled event to talk about funding for infrastructure projects. President Obama used the temporarily shut down I-495 bridge over the Christina River as a backdrop as he pushed a public-private partnership to repair Americaâ€™s crumbling infrastructure. President Obama says the short-term fix to the Transportation Trust Fund only puts off the problem, so his executive order will help states and cities form alliances to create jobs and fix the things that need to be repaired. Much of the repair to the tilting I-495 bridge will be covered by $35 million in federal emergency funding. As for the work on the tilting bridge, that is ahead of schedule at this point. The new underground support columns were finished this week. If all goes well, DelDOT says the southbound lanes could open before Labor Day.
