Philadelphia police are questioning a person of interest in the case of a young woman whose body was found early Monday in a duffel bag in North Philadelphia. Police say the 23-year-old man lives in the West Philadelphia apartment complex at 40th and Brown streets in Mantua that the victim was staying in the past month. Police became suspicious after he walked into a hospital to be treated for burns. Police have determined the identity of the young woman as that of 23-year-old Laura Araujo. Charges are expected Wednesday.

HAZMAT crews, police, and the fire department were on the scene after a reported explosion in a school’s basement in Northeast Philadelphia Tuesday night at The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush in the 11000 block of Knights Road. Fire department crews found an acid HAZMAT box that apparently exploded in the school’s basement. A school maintenance worker was taken to the hospital.

SEPTA and Philadelphia police have joined forces to find the suspect or suspects who reportedly shot at a bus with a BB gun. A Route 54 bus was traveling on Lehigh Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets when two of its windows were shot at and shattered by a BB gun. No one inside the bus was injured.

Weather, July 16

Rain showers, some sun later. High 84 in Center City.
