Fire officials are still working to determine the cause of the fire that killed four kids and displaced dozens in Southwest Philadelphia over the weekend. On Monday, firefighters and the Red Cross returned to the neighborhood for a safety blitz. It was a door-to-door effort for firefighters and Red Cross volunteers on the 6500 block of Genser Street. Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says there was a working smoke alarm in the house where the four kids perished, but an evacuation plan wasn't in place and officials want to make sure everyone on the block knows what to do when an emergency happens. Firefighters have gotten threats from angry residents in the aftermath of the deadly blaze. Tensions boiled over Monday afternoon as around 200 protestors gathered in front of Ladder 4 Engine 40 blocking the fire stations and Woodland Avenue near 65th Street. Police were called in to take control of the situation. Several arrests were made. The protestors then moved to the scene of the fires.

New Jersey State Police say a trooper was involved in a shooting incident in Mount Laurel Monday while attempting to make an arrest during an investigation behind the Aloft Hotel on Route 73 and Fellowship Road. Police say the person, who is now under arrest, received a minor gunshot wound to the arm. Several troopers received minor injuries and were treated and released. The shooting is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team.

A Montgomery County man will spend at least four years in state prison after crashing weddings in three counties last summer stealing more than $12,000 in gifts. Joseph Franzone hit four wedding receptions in Montgomery, Chester and Lancaster Counties last summer, stealing cash, gifts, even, in one case, the bride’s shoes and veil. The 36-year-old Bridgeport, PA, man was sentenced to four to eight years in prison after stealing boxes with gifts at weddings in Montgomery and Lancaster counties, and an attempted theft in Chester County.

Weather, July 8
